Maryanne clutched David’s last letter. In it he’d apologized for making her worry as though he could see her tears of relief. He was safe but still stationed in Britain. He longed for her cooking and her touch. He missed playing catch with their son, Billy. He sent her his love and two dollars for Christmas.  The biting snow began again just as Maryanne turned the corner on Main Street and crossed over to the Five and Dime store. In the festively painted storefront she spied a worthy present. A painted wood replica of the P-51 Mustang Billy’s daddy flies.
